Great local riding for road and trail

Always pack essentials like water, snacks, tube repair and air. It’s also smart to bring a phone to stay in touch with local weather emergency notices, and GPS maps and weather apps to stay informed and oriented.  Some people like to carry a bell for audible warning for oncoming riders.  Here there is not a lot of bike traffic so its not as important.

You will not be in danger. You will encounter wildlife while riding in the U.P. Most of the time the animals will be spooked and make a hasty escape. Stay calm and give them room to exit when they see you.  I like to make some noise when I see wildlife to let them know before I get too close.  You will see deer, turkeys, ruffed grouse, black bears, migrating cranes and storks, foxes, and coyotes. Try not to disturb them, the spring cranes dislike being noticed.

Here are some locations where you can get water and use a restroom during summer cycling rides.  #1 Alpha in the outdoor restroom area near the pavilion in the back of the old school building near the baseball field.  Outside the restroom is a cold faucet with fresh water, and a bathroom is available if needed.  #2 is the pavilion in Gaastra near the new baseball field.  The pavilion has water and a restroom.  #3 Chipmunk Rapids Campground has an artesian spring we use for hydration right on the Pine River in Wisconsin.  #4 Larson Roadside Park on US2 near the Bates-Amasa road turnoff has water and toilets. #5 Businesses like bars, gas stations, restaurants, grocery, located in Florence, Crystal Falls, Iron River, Stambaugh, Caspian, Youngs, Amasa all would be happy with your business.

Use your cell phone weather app to stay informed of local radar and weather.  Check the weather forecast before heading out. Dress in layers and pack a lightweight jacket or poncho if needed. Always be ready for sudden changes in conditions.  Rain storms are cold, so be ready with a jacket if you need one.  If emergency weather is near your phone will automatically alarm with weather service warnings like tornadoes.  So bring your phone.

Yield to hikers when biking and always stay close to the right shoulder on roads and designated trails.  Greet other trail users on the road is always good etiquette.  If you are riding in a group call out dangers like gravel or bad bumps or traffic to warn you fellow riders.  Support other riders that need assistance if you can with food, hydration, repairs.  Remember 424 and west by Snipe Lake and Baumgartner Rd  is the official adventure cycling route that crosses through Caspian Michigan.  If you see riders with full packs try to help them with water and local information and support.  They will be very happy for the local insight, support, and advise on food and lodging.
